Acropolis(Parthenon) - The Acropolis of Athens (Ancient Greek: ἡ Ἀκρόπολις τῶν Ἀθηνῶν, romanized: hē Akropolis tōn Athēnōn; Modern Greek: Ακρόπολη Αθηνών, romanized: Akrópoli Athinón) is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, Greece, and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word Acropolis is from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, "highest point, extremity") and πόλις (polis, "city").[1] The term acropolis is generic and there are many other acropoleis in Greece. During ancient times the Acropolis of Athens was also more properly known as Cecropia, after the legendary serpent-man Cecrops, the supposed first Athenian king. While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as early as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles (c. 495–429 BC) in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the buildings whose present remains are the site's most important ones, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike.[2][3] The Parthenon and the other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians during the Morean War when gunpowder being stored by the then Turkish rulers in the Parthenon was hit by a Venetian bombardment and exploded
Acropolis Museum - The Acropolis Museum (Greek: Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, Mouseio Akropolis) is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. The Acropolis Museum also lies over the ruins of part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens. The museum was founded in 2003 while the Organization of the Museum was established in 2008. It opened to the public on 20 June 2009.[1] More than 4,250 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres.
Temple of Zeus - The Temple of Olympian Zeus (Greek: Ναός του Ολυμπίου Διός, Naós tou Olympíou Diós), also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, is a former colossal temple at the centre of the Greek capital, Athens. It was dedicated to "Olympian" Zeus, a name originating from his position as head of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century BC during the rule of the Athenian tyrants, who envisaged building the greatest temple in the ancient world, but it was not completed until the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, some 638 years after the project had begun. During the Roman period, the temple, which included 104 colossal columns, was renowned as the largest temple in Greece and housed one of the largest cult statues in the ancient world. The temple's glory was short-lived, as it fell into disuse after being pillaged during a barbarian invasion in 267 AD, just about a century after its completion. It was probably never repaired and was reduced to ruins thereafter. In the centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, it was extensively quarried for building materials to supply building projects elsewhere in the city. However a substantial part of the temple remains today, notably 16 of the original gigantic columns, and it continues to be part of a very important archaeological site in Greece.

Delphi(Archeological Area) - Delphi (/ˈdɛlfaɪ, ˈdɛlfi/;[1] Greek: Δελφοί [ðelˈfi]),[a] in legend previously called Pytho (Πυθώ), was an ancient sacred precinct and the seat of Pythia, the major oracle who was consulted about important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. The ancient Greeks considered the centre of the world to be in Delphi, marked by the stone monument known as the Omphalos of Delphi (navel). According to the Suda, Delphi took its name from the Delphyne, the she-serpent (drakaina) who lived there and was killed by the god Apollo (in other accounts the serpent was the male serpent (drakon) Python).[5][6] The sacred precinct occupies a delineated region on the south-western slope of Mount Parnassus. It is now an extensive archaeological site, and since 1938 a part of Parnassos National Park. Pythia - Pythia (/ˈpɪθiə/;[1] Ancient Greek: Πυθία [pyːˈtʰíaː]) was the name of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. She specifically served as its oracle and was known as the Oracle of Delphi. Her title was also historically glossed in English as the Pythoness.[2] The name Pythia is derived from Pytho, which in myth was the original name of Delphi. Etymologically, the Greeks derived this place name from the verb πύθειν (púthein) 'to rot', which refers to the sickly sweet smell from the decomposing body of the monstrous Python after it was slain by Apollo.[3] The Pythia was established at the latest in the 8th century BC,[4] (though some estimates date the shrine to as early as 1400 BC),[5][6][7] and was widely credited for her prophecies uttered under divine possession (enthusiasmos) by Apollo. The Pythian priestess emerged pre-eminent by the end of the 7th century BC and continued to be consulted until the late 4th century AD.[8] During this period, the Delphic Oracle was the most prestigious and authoritative oracle among the Greeks, and she was among the most powerful women of the classical world. The oracle is one of the best-documented religious institutions of the classical Greeks. Authors who mention the oracle include Aeschylus, Aristotle, Clement of Alexandria, Diodorus, Diogenes, Euripides, Herodotus, Julian, Justin, Livy, Lucan, Nepos, Ovid, Pausanias, Pindar, Plato, Plutarch, Sophocles, Strabo, Thucydides, and Xenophon. Nevertheless, details of how the Pythia operated are scarce, missing, or non-existent, as authors from the classical period (6th to 4th centuries BC) treat the process as common knowledge with no need to explain. Those who discussed the oracle in any detail are from 1st century BC to 4th century AD and give conflicting stories.[9] One of the main stories claimed that the Pythia delivered oracles in a frenzied state induced by vapours rising from a chasm in the rock, and that she spoke gibberish which priests interpreted as the enigmatic prophecies and turned them into poetic dactylic hexameters preserved in Greek literature.[10] This idea, however, has been challenged by scholars such as Joseph Fontenrose and Lisa Maurizio, who argue that the ancient sources uniformly represent the Pythia speaking intelligibly, and giving prophecies in her own voice.[11] Herodotus, writing in the fifth century BC, describes the Pythia speaking in dactylic hexameters.

Isthmus of Corinth - The Isthmus of Corinth (Greek: Ισθμός της Κορίνθου) is the narrow land bridge which connects the Peloponnese peninsula with the rest of the mainland of Greece, near the city of Corinth. The Isthmus was known in the ancient world as the landmark separating the Peloponnese from mainland Greece. In the first century AD the geographer Strabo[1] noted a stele on the Isthmus of Corinth, which bore two inscriptions. One towards the East, i.e. towards Megara, reading: "Here is not Peloponnesus, but Ionia" (τάδ᾽ οὐχὶ Πελοπόννησος, ἀλλ᾽ Ἰωνία) and the one towards the West, i.e. towards the Peloponnese: "Here is Peloponnesus, not Ionia" (τάδ᾽ ἐστὶ Πελοπόννησος, οὐκ Ἰωνία); Plutarch ascribed the erection of the stele to the Attic hero Theseus, on his way to Athens.[2] To the west of the Isthmus is the Gulf of Corinth, and to the east the Saronic Gulf. Since 1893 the Corinth Canal has run through the 6.3 km (3.9 mi) wide isthmus, effectively making the Peloponnese an island. Today, two road bridges, two railway bridges and two submersible bridges at both ends of the canal connect the mainland side of the isthmus with the Peloponnese side. Also a military emergency bridge is located at the west end of the canal.
Epidavrus - Epidaurus (Greek: Ἐπίδαυρος) was a small city (polis) in ancient Greece, on the Argolid Peninsula at the Saronic Gulf. Two modern towns bear the name Epidavros: Palaia Epidavros and Nea Epidavros. Since 2010 they belong to the new municipality of Epidaurus, part of the regional unit of Argolis. The seat of the municipality is the town Lygourio.[2] The nearby sanctuary and ancient theatre were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 because of their exemplary architecture and importance in the development and spread of healing sanctuaries and cults across the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.[3]
Nafplio - Nafplio or Nauplio (Greek: Ναύπλιο) is a coastal city located in the Peloponnese in Greece and it is the capital of the regional unit of Argolis and an important touristic destination. Founded in antiquity, the city became an important seaport in the Middle Ages during the Frankokratia as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire. The city was the second capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from 1827 until 1834.
Ancient Nemea - In Greek mythology, Nemea was ruled by king Lycurgus and queen Eurydice. Nemea was famous in Greek myth as the home of the Nemean Lion, which was killed by the hero Heracles,[1] and as the place where the infant Opheltes, lying on a bed of parsley, was killed by a serpent while his nurse Hypsipyle fetched water for the Seven against Thebes on their way from Argos to Thebes. The Seven founded the Nemean Games in his memory, according to its aition, or founding myth, accounting for the crown of victory being made of parsley or the wild form of celery and for the black robes of the judges, interpreted as a sign of mourning. The Nemean Games were documented from 573 BC, or earlier, at the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea.[2] At the temenos, the grave of Opheltes was surrounded by open-air altars and enclosed within a stone wall.[1] The sanctuary's necessary spring was named Adrasteia: Pausanias wondered whether it had the name because an "Adrastos" had "discovered" it,[1] but Adrasteia, the "inescapable one", was a nurse of the infant Zeus in Crete. The tumulus nearby was credited as the burial mound of his father, and the men of Argos had the privilege of naming the priest of Nemean Zeus, Pausanias was informed when he visited in the late 2nd century CE. In his time the temple, which he noted was "worth seeing", stood in a grove of cypresses; its roof had fallen in and there was no cult image within the temple. Three limestone columns of the Temple of Nemean Zeus of about 330 BC have stood since their construction, and two more were reconstructed in 2002.[3] As of late 2007, four more are being re-erected.[4] Three orders of architecture were employed at this temple, which stands at the end of the Classic period and presages this and other developments of Hellenistic architecture, such as the slenderness (a height of 6.34 column diameters) of the Doric columns of the exterior.[5] The site around the temple has been excavated in annual campaigns since 1973: the great open-air altar, baths, and ancient accommodations for visitors have been unearthed. The temple stands on the site of an Archaic period temple, of which only a foundation wall is still visible. The stadion has recently been discovered. It is notable for its well-preserved vaulted entrance tunnel, dated to about 320 BC, with ancient graffiti on the walls.
Sacred Town of Mesologhi - Missolonghi or Messolonghi (Greek: Μεσολόγγι, pronounced [mesoˈloɲɟi]) is a municipality of 34,416 people (according to the 2011 census)[1] in western Greece. The town is the capital of Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit, and the seat of the municipality of Iera Polis Messolongiou (Greek: Ιερά Πόλις Μεσολογγίου, lit. 'Sacred Town of Missolonghi'). Missolonghi is known as the site of a dramatic siege during the Greek War of Independence, and of the death of poet Lord Byron.
The Garden of Heroes , in modern Greek : Κήπος των Ηρώων / Kípos ton Iróon, is located north of Missolonghi in Greece . This is an area of ​​almost fourteen hectares where, during the Greek War of Independence ( 1821 - 1829 ), the fighters of the Missolonghi City Guard fought and were buried as heroes 1 . This is where the inhabitants of Missolonghi buried their dead from the Greek revolution 1 , the cemetery not being accessible 2 . House of Palama-Trikoupis - -Kostis Palamas (Greek: Κωστής Παλαμάς; 13 January [O.S. 8 January] 1859 – 27 February 1943[1]) was a Greek poet who wrote the words to the Olympic Hymn. He was a central figure of the Greek literary generation of the 1880s and one of the cofounders of the so-called New Athenian School (or Palamian School, or Second Athenian School) along with Georgios Drosinis and Ioannis Polemis. -Charilaos Trikoupis (Greek: Χαρίλαος Τρικούπης; 11 July 1832 – 30 March 1896) was a Greek politician who served as a Prime Minister of Greece seven times from 1875 until 1895. He is best remembered for introducing the vote of confidence in the Greek constitution, proposing and funding such ambitious and modern projects as the construction of the Corinth Canal, but also eventually leading the country to bankruptcy. Nowadays, he is commonly considered one of the greatest Greek Prime Ministers to ever have served.

The Theater of ancient Oeniadae - The Theater of ancient Oeniadae is located at the Trikardos site, in the Municipal Department of Katochi, Holy Town of Messolonghi Municipality, Aetoloacarnania Prefecture. Two building phases have been identified in the Theatre of Oeniades, mainly corresponding to restructuring of the stage building and, to a lesser extent, other interventions in the rest of the theater. Phase Ι: In the mid-4th c. BC, the theater functioned with the aid of a single-storey rectangular stage building with five large openings in its façade, formed by four pillars bearing Doric capitals with abacus and echinus. The openings between the pillars were filled with paintings used as scenic backdrops for the performances. Phase ΙΙ (first half of the 3rd c. BC): To the façade of the original stage was added a proscenium (logeion), which now became the main structural element. Two small parascenia were also built east and west of the stage, framing the protruding proscenium. Adjoining the front of the pillars supporting the flat proscenium roof were semi-columns with Ionic capitals. The original rectangular stage building was raised to form a second storey. On the upper band of the architrave of the entablature appears the choregic inscription (ΤΗ)Ν ΟΡΧΗΣΤ(ΡΑΝ) [(TE)N ORCHEST(RAN)], referring to the construction of the orchestra. At the same time as the interventions to the façade were carried out, the older orchestra was also modified with the addition of a stone surround and the construction of a rainwater drainage duct in the space between the cavea and the surround. The cavea of the theater, carved out of the grey local limestone, is larger than a semicircle and consists of 28 rows of seats, of which only 19 remain. The southwest end of the cavea is formed of an artificial earthen bank on which were set rows of stone seats, some of which are preserved, with inscriptions, in the lower part of the cuneus. The spectators reached their seats via nine staircases which divided the cavea into 11 cunei, without a passageway. The southeast and northwest ends of the cavea were completed by retaining walls, one built of polygonal masonry and the other of irregular coursed masonry. Of the other architectural elements of the theater, the orchestra is preserved, 16.14 m. in diameter, with a hard floor of beaten earth and encircled by a surround 0.46 m. wide, which is preserved in excellent condition. Between the orchestra and the first row of seats runs a drainage duct covered with slabs, which formed a sort of carved passageway around the orchestra providing access to the cavea seats. The stage building is preserved in poor condition; only the foundations of the proscenium survive, to a total length of 21.89 m., and those of the parascenia, each measuring 5 m. x 5.62 m. The Theater of Oeniades, like other ancient theaters, presents certain unique features, such as the fact that the axes of the cavea and staircases do not meet in the centre of the orchestra, and that the outer wall of the stage building is not parallel to the ancient road past the area. Of the cavea, only 19 rows of seats survive. The first systematic excavation of the Theater of Oeniades was undertaken by American archaeologist Benjamin Powell, in the second half of December 1900. The excavation work revealed the stage, the orchestra and about half of the cavea. In May of the following year (1901), the stone slabs carved with emancipatory inscriptions in the southwest part of the cavea came to light. Afterwards the site remained filled in until 1987, when the 6th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Patras, through its director Dr Lazaros Kolonas, undertook to uncover it fully. During the course of this period of work, the theatre was methodically cleared, the slope of the infill on the west side of the cavea was largely restored, and six slabs covering the drainage duct around the orchestra were revealed. The new systematic excavation, study and publication of the Theater of Oeniades became possible once the relevant application by the Institut für Klassische Archäologie of the University of Vienna had been approved by the Central Archaeological Council of the Ministry of Culture. The research programme was funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) of the Austrian Ministry of Culture. The work on the archaeological site, carried out by myself and Prof. Savvas Gogos, began in 1991, continued in 1992 and was substantially completed in 1993. The excavation of the theater had to be undertaken virtually from scratch, since only a few sections of the cunei remained visible. Apart from the careful cleaning of the architectural elements and the drawing of the cavea, the orchestra with the rainwater drainage duct and the stage of the theater, this work comprised section drawings of all the basic parts of the stage building, and drawings (plans, elevations and sections) of architectural members, mainly from the epistyle of the proscenium, found in various parts of the theater area. Drawings were also made of the retaining walls of the cavea and the elevations of the walls of the stage building. Finally, test trenches were opened in selected spots of the stage area, the drainage duct and the cavea, with the object of collecting supplementary pottery dating information. Achelous river - The Achelous (Greek: Αχελώος, Ancient Greek: Ἀχελῷος Akhelôios), also Acheloos, is a river in Epirus, western Greece. It is 220 km (137 mi) long.[1][2] It formed the boundary between Acarnania and Aetolia of antiquity. It empties into the Ionian Sea. In ancient times its spirit was venerated as the river god Achelous. Herodotus, taking notice of the shoreline-transforming power of the Acheloos River, even compared it to the Nile in this respect: 'There are other rivers as well which, though not as large as the Nile, have had substantial results. In particular (although I could name others), there is the Achelous, which flows through Acarnania into the sea and has already turned half the Echinades islands into mainland.' (2.10, trans. In the centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, it was extensively quarried for building materials to supply building projects elsewhere in the city. However a substantial part of the temple remains today, notably 16 of the original gigantic columns, and it continues to be part of a very important archaeological site in Greece.

Temple Of Posidon - The Temple of Poseidon is an ancient Greek temple on Cape Sounion, Greece, dedicated to the god Poseidon. There is evidence of the establishment of sanctuaries on the cape from as early as the 11th century BC. Sounion's most prominent temples, the Temple of Athena and the Temple of Poseidon, are however not believed to have been built until about 700 BC, and their kouroi (freestanding Greek statues of young men) date from about one hundred years later.[1] The material and size of the offerings at the Temple of Poseidon indicate that it was likely frequented by members of the elite and the aristocratic class.[2] The Greeks considered Poseidon to be the "master of the sea".[3] Given the importance to Athens of trade by sea and the significance of its navy in its creation and survival during the fifth century, Poseidon was of a particular relevance and value to the Athenians

Delphi(Archeological Area) - Delphi (/ˈdɛlfaɪ, ˈdɛlfi/;[1] Greek: Δελφοί [ðelˈfi]),[a] in legend previously called Pytho (Πυθώ), was an ancient sacred precinct and the seat of Pythia, the major oracle who was consulted about important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. The ancient Greeks considered the centre of the world to be in Delphi, marked by the stone monument known as the Omphalos of Delphi (navel). According to the Suda, Delphi took its name from the Delphyne, the she-serpent (drakaina) who lived there and was killed by the god Apollo (in other accounts the serpent was the male serpent (drakon) Python).[5][6] The sacred precinct occupies a delineated region on the south-western slope of Mount Parnassus. It is now an extensive archaeological site, and since 1938 a part of Parnassos National Park. The precinct is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in having had a great influence in the ancient world, as evidenced by the various monuments built there by most of the important ancient Greek city-states, demonstrating their fundamental Hellenic unity
Pythia - Pythia (/ˈpɪθiə/;[1] Ancient Greek: Πυθία [pyːˈtʰíaː]) was the name of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. She specifically served as its oracle and was known as the Oracle of Delphi. Her title was also historically glossed in English as the Pythoness.[2] The name Pythia is derived from Pytho, which in myth was the original name of Delphi. Etymologically, the Greeks derived this place name from the verb πύθειν (púthein) 'to rot', which refers to the sickly sweet smell from the decomposing body of the monstrous Python after it was slain by Apollo.[3] The Pythia was established at the latest in the 8th century BC,[4] (though some estimates date the shrine to as early as 1400 BC),[5][6][7] and was widely credited for her prophecies uttered under divine possession (enthusiasmos) by Apollo. The Pythian priestess emerged pre-eminent by the end of the 7th century BC and continued to be consulted until the late 4th century AD.[8] During this period, the Delphic Oracle was the most prestigious and authoritative oracle among the Greeks, and she was among the most powerful women of the classical world. The oracle is one of the best-documented religious institutions of the classical Greeks. Authors who mention the oracle include Aeschylus, Aristotle, Clement of Alexandria, Diodorus, Diogenes, Euripides, Herodotus, Julian, Justin, Livy, Lucan, Nepos, Ovid, Pausanias, Pindar, Plato, Plutarch, Sophocles, Strabo, Thucydides, and Xenophon. Nevertheless, details of how the Pythia operated are scarce, missing, or non-existent, as authors from the classical period (6th to 4th centuries BC) treat the process as common knowledge with no need to explain. Those who discussed the oracle in any detail are from 1st century BC to 4th century AD and give conflicting stories.[9] One of the main stories claimed that the Pythia delivered oracles in a frenzied state induced by vapours rising from a chasm in the rock, and that she spoke gibberish which priests interpreted as the enigmatic prophecies and turned them into poetic dactylic hexameters preserved in Greek literature.[10] This idea, however, has been challenged by scholars such as Joseph Fontenrose and Lisa Maurizio, who argue that the ancient sources uniformly represent the Pythia speaking intelligibly, and giving prophecies in her own voice.[11] Herodotus, writing in the fifth century BC, describes the Pythia speaking in dactylic hexameters.

Isthmus of Corinth - The Isthmus of Corinth (Greek: Ισθμός της Κορίνθου) is the narrow land bridge which connects the Peloponnese peninsula with the rest of the mainland of Greece, near the city of Corinth. The Isthmus was known in the ancient world as the landmark separating the Peloponnese from mainland Greece. In the first century AD the geographer Strabo[1] noted a stele on the Isthmus of Corinth, which bore two inscriptions. One towards the East, i.e. towards Megara, reading: "Here is not Peloponnesus, but Ionia" (τάδ᾽ οὐχὶ Πελοπόννησος, ἀλλ᾽ Ἰωνία) and the one towards the West, i.e. towards the Peloponnese: "Here is Peloponnesus, not Ionia" (τάδ᾽ ἐστὶ Πελοπόννησος, οὐκ Ἰωνία); Plutarch ascribed the erection of the stele to the Attic hero Theseus, on his way to Athens.[2] To the west of the Isthmus is the Gulf of Corinth, and to the east the Saronic Gulf. Since 1893 the Corinth Canal has run through the 6.3 km (3.9 mi) wide isthmus, effectively making the Peloponnese an island. Today, two road bridges, two railway bridges and two submersible bridges at both ends of the canal connect the mainland side of the isthmus with the Peloponnese side. Also a military emergency bridge is located at the west end of the canal.
Epidavrus - Epidaurus (Greek: Ἐπίδαυρος) was a small city (polis) in ancient Greece, on the Argolid Peninsula at the Saronic Gulf. Two modern towns bear the name Epidavros: Palaia Epidavros and Nea Epidavros. Since 2010 they belong to the new municipality of Epidaurus, part of the regional unit of Argolis. The seat of the municipality is the town Lygourio.[2] The nearby sanctuary and ancient theatre were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 because of their exemplary architecture and importance in the development and spread of healing sanctuaries and cults across the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.[3]
Nafplio - Nafplio or Nauplio (Greek: Ναύπλιο) is a coastal city located in the Peloponnese in Greece and it is the capital of the regional unit of Argolis and an important touristic destination. Founded in antiquity, the city became an important seaport in the Middle Ages during the Frankokratia as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire. The city was the second capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from 1827 until 1834.
Ancient Nemea - In Greek mythology, Nemea was ruled by king Lycurgus and queen Eurydice. Nemea was famous in Greek myth as the home of the Nemean Lion, which was killed by the hero Heracles,[1] and as the place where the infant Opheltes, lying on a bed of parsley, was killed by a serpent while his nurse Hypsipyle fetched water for the Seven against Thebes on their way from Argos to Thebes. The Seven founded the Nemean Games in his memory, according to its aition, or founding myth, accounting for the crown of victory being made of parsley or the wild form of celery and for the black robes of the judges, interpreted as a sign of mourning. The Nemean Games were documented from 573 BC, or earlier, at the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea.[2] At the temenos, the grave of Opheltes was surrounded by open-air altars and enclosed within a stone wall.[1] The sanctuary's necessary spring was named Adrasteia: Pausanias wondered whether it had the name because an "Adrastos" had "discovered" it,[1] but Adrasteia, the "inescapable one", was a nurse of the infant Zeus in Crete. The tumulus nearby was credited as the burial mound of his father, and the men of Argos had the privilege of naming the priest of Nemean Zeus, Pausanias was informed when he visited in the late 2nd century CE. In his time the temple, which he noted was "worth seeing", stood in a grove of cypresses; its roof had fallen in and there was no cult image within the temple. Three limestone columns of the Temple of Nemean Zeus of about 330 BC have stood since their construction, and two more were reconstructed in 2002.[3] As of late 2007, four more are being re-erected.[4] Three orders of architecture were employed at this temple, which stands at the end of the Classic period and presages this and other developments of Hellenistic architecture, such as the slenderness (a height of 6.34 column diameters) of the Doric columns of the exterior.[5] The site around the temple has been excavated in annual campaigns since 1973: the great open-air altar, baths, and ancient accommodations for visitors have been unearthed. The temple stands on the site of an Archaic period temple, of which only a foundation wall is still visible. The stadion has recently been discovered. It is notable for its well-preserved vaulted entrance tunnel, dated to about 320 BC, with ancient graffiti on the walls.

Sacred Town of Mesologhi - Missolonghi or Messolonghi (Greek: Μεσολόγγι, pronounced [mesoˈloɲɟi]) is a municipality of 34,416 people (according to the 2011 census)[1] in western Greece. The town is the capital of Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit, and the seat of the municipality of Iera Polis Messolongiou (Greek: Ιερά Πόλις Μεσολογγίου, lit. 'Sacred Town of Missolonghi'). Missolonghi is known as the site of a dramatic siege during the Greek War of Independence, and of the death of poet Lord Byron.
The Garden of Heroes , in modern Greek : Κήπος των Ηρώων / Kípos ton Iróon, is located north of Missolonghi in Greece . This is an area of ​​almost fourteen hectares where, during the Greek War of Independence ( 1821 - 1829 ), the fighters of the Missolonghi City Guard fought and were buried as heroes 1 . This is where the inhabitants of Missolonghi buried their dead from the Greek revolution 1 , the cemetery not being accessible 2 . InOctober 1838, in the presence of King Otto I and Queen Amélie of Oldenburg , the reburial of the bones of the deceased took place and their official placement in the mound that had been built there. At the same time, the stone wall around the Wall of Heroes 2 was rebuilt , which still exists today. House of Palama-Trikoupis - -Kostis Palamas (Greek: Κωστής Παλαμάς; 13 January [O.S. 8 January] 1859 – 27 February 1943[1]) was a Greek poet who wrote the words to the Olympic Hymn. He was a central figure of the Greek literary generation of the 1880s and one of the cofounders of the so-called New Athenian School (or Palamian School, or Second Athenian School) along with Georgios Drosinis and Ioannis Polemis. -Charilaos Trikoupis (Greek: Χαρίλαος Τρικούπης; 11 July 1832 – 30 March 1896) was a Greek politician who served as a Prime Minister of Greece seven times from 1875 until 1895. He is best remembered for introducing the vote of confidence in the Greek constitution, proposing and funding such ambitious and modern projects as the construction of the Corinth Canal, but also eventually leading the country to bankruptcy. Nowadays, he is commonly considered one of the greatest Greek Prime Ministers to ever have served.
Aitoliko(the little Veniche of Greece) - It may be a slight exaggeration, but for many locals, the town of Aitoliko, situated on an island between two lagoons in western Greece is their own, smaller version of Venice. The old part of the town lies quite romantically on an island between two lagoons, of which the Aitoliko Lagoon extending up to Stamna lies to the north, and the Missolonghi Lagoon, which was Lake Kynia in antiquity, lies to the south where it connects with the Gulf of Patras and into the Ionian Sea. The town itself has a traditional Greek charm, with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and a picturesque harbor. The Theater of ancient Oeniadae - The Theater of ancient Oeniadae is located at the Trikardos site, in the Municipal Department of Katochi, Holy Town of Messolonghi Municipality, Aetoloacarnania Prefecture. Two building phases have been identified in the Theatre of Oeniades, mainly corresponding to restructuring of the stage building and, to a lesser extent, other interventions in the rest of the theater. Phase Ι: In the mid-4th c. BC, the theater functioned with the aid of a single-storey rectangular stage building with five large openings in its façade, formed by four pillars bearing Doric capitals with abacus and echinus. The openings between the pillars were filled with paintings used as scenic backdrops for the performances. Phase ΙΙ (first half of the 3rd c. BC): To the façade of the original stage was added a proscenium (logeion), which now became the main structural element. Two small parascenia were also built east and west of the stage, framing the protruding proscenium. Adjoining the front of the pillars supporting the flat proscenium roof were semi-columns with Ionic capitals. The original rectangular stage building was raised to form a second storey. On the upper band of the architrave of the entablature appears the choregic inscription (ΤΗ)Ν ΟΡΧΗΣΤ(ΡΑΝ) [(TE)N ORCHEST(RAN)], referring to the construction of the orchestra. At the same time as the interventions to the façade were carried out, the older orchestra was also modified with the addition of a stone surround and the construction of a rainwater drainage duct in the space between the cavea and the surround. The cavea of the theater, carved out of the grey local limestone, is larger than a semicircle and consists of 28 rows of seats, of which only 19 remain. The southwest end of the cavea is formed of an artificial earthen bank on which were set rows of stone seats, some of which are preserved, with inscriptions, in the lower part of the cuneus. The spectators reached their seats via nine staircases which divided the cavea into 11 cunei, without a passageway. The southeast and northwest ends of the cavea were completed by retaining walls, one built of polygonal masonry and the other of irregular coursed masonry. Of the other architectural elements of the theater, the orchestra is preserved, 16.14 m. in diameter, with a hard floor of beaten earth and encircled by a surround 0.46 m. wide, which is preserved in excellent condition. Between the orchestra and the first row of seats runs a drainage duct covered with slabs, which formed a sort of carved passageway around the orchestra providing access to the cavea seats. The stage building is preserved in poor condition; only the foundations of the proscenium survive, to a total length of 21.89 m., and those of the parascenia, each measuring 5 m. x 5.62 m. The Theater of Oeniades, like other ancient theaters, presents certain unique features, such as the fact that the axes of the cavea and staircases do not meet in the centre of the orchestra, and that the outer wall of the stage building is not parallel to the ancient road past the area. Of the cavea, only 19 rows of seats survive. The first systematic excavation of the Theater of Oeniades was undertaken by American archaeologist Benjamin Powell, in the second half of December 1900. The excavation work revealed the stage, the orchestra and about half of the cavea. In May of the following year (1901), the stone slabs carved with emancipatory inscriptions in the southwest part of the cavea came to light. Afterwards the site remained filled in until 1987, when the 6th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Patras, through its director Dr Lazaros Kolonas, undertook to uncover it fully. During the course of this period of work, the theatre was methodically cleared, the slope of the infill on the west side of the cavea was largely restored, and six slabs covering the drainage duct around the orchestra were revealed. The new systematic excavation, study and publication of the Theater of Oeniades became possible once the relevant application by the Institut für Klassische Archäologie of the University of Vienna had been approved by the Central Archaeological Council of the Ministry of Culture. The research programme was funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) of the Austrian Ministry of Culture. The work on the archaeological site, carried out by myself and Prof. Savvas Gogos, began in 1991, continued in 1992 and was substantially completed in 1993. The excavation of the theater had to be undertaken virtually from scratch, since only a few sections of the cunei remained visible. Apart from the careful cleaning of the architectural elements and the drawing of the cavea, the orchestra with the rainwater drainage duct and the stage of the theater, this work comprised section drawings of all the basic parts of the stage building, and drawings (plans, elevations and sections) of architectural members, mainly from the epistyle of the proscenium, found in various parts of the theater area. Drawings were also made of the retaining walls of the cavea and the elevations of the walls of the stage building. Finally, test trenches were opened in selected spots of the stage area, the drainage duct and the cavea, with the object of collecting supplementary pottery dating information. Achelous river - The Achelous (Greek: Αχελώος, Ancient Greek: Ἀχελῷος Akhelôios), also Acheloos, is a river in Epirus, western Greece. It is 220 km (137 mi) long.[1][2] It formed the boundary between Acarnania and Aetolia of antiquity. It empties into the Ionian Sea. In ancient times its spirit was venerated as the river god Achelous. Herodotus, taking notice of the shoreline-transforming power of the Acheloos River, even compared it to the Nile in this respect: 'There are other rivers as well which, though not as large as the Nile, have had substantial results. In particular (although I could name others), there is the Achelous, which flows through Acarnania into the sea and has already turned half the Echinades islands into mainland.' (2.10, trans. Waterfield) It is said to have been called more anciently Thoas, Axenus and Thestius.[3]
